Yahoo Tech Slated For March Shutdown
Share |

As Yahoo continues to reconsider exactly which properties are core to the company, Yahoo Tech has failed to make the cut.  The site has been given an end-of-life date, and everything of value (including visitors) will just be used to provide another Yahoo asset a lift.

An announcement that Nick Saint spotted today reads, "As of March 11, 2010, tech.yahoo.com will no longer be available.  Visitors to the site will be redirected to Yahoo! Technology News where they will continue to have access to the best technology content available online."

A few people are sure to protest this move; Yahoo noted that tech.yahoo.com profiles, along with ratings and reviews, will be deleted, and no one likes to lose data.

However, this is probably a smart decision on Yahoo's part given that Yahoo Tech's existence seems a little redundant.  It doesn't do much for Yahoo in terms of search and advertising, either.

Then here's one more good reason for the site to get shuttered: Although Nick Saint absolutely deserves credit for being the first blogger to spot Yahoo's announcement, the Yahoo Tech closure notice appears to have been posted a full five days ago.

Windows Live Messenger iPhone App Gets Over a Million Downloads in 5 Days
Share |

Microsoft launched its Windows Live Messenger app for the iphone last week. Today, the company has announced that in only five days, the app was downloaded by over a million people.

"While Messenger for iPhone is relatively new, for many connecting with Messenger friends on your mobile phone is not new," says Microsoft's Michael Chang.  "In addition to the more than one million iPhone Messenger users, there are over 24 million people who connect with Messenger friends from other mobile phones through a client application, their phone’s browser, or SMS."

"Along with Messenger Connect, Messenger IM in Hotmail, and the coming integration with Xbox LIVE, the new iPhone app is just one more way that we are bringing Messenger to you across the web and on your phone," adds Chang.

Last week, MySpace announced its own new integration with Windows Live Messenger (as well as Hotmail). That said, the popularity of the app could be a good thing for MySpace as well as Microsoft.

Microsoft says it will be updating the app shortly, in order to address some issues users have complained about.

The Most Powerful Voices in Open Source

Most Powerful Voices in Open Source

The Open Source community has many influential and important people. Yet some individuals tend to hold a bigger megaphone than the rest of us. Some of these people are well recognized while others exist in open source niches. But collectively they’re all the most vocal, followed and re-posted open source commentators in the community today. These are people you need to know.

In compiling our ranking of the most powerful voices in open source, we struggled to find the appropriate metrics to measure both broadcast power and profundity. After some lengthy discussions, we decided to create a Most Powerful Voices (MPV) formula to use as a yardstick. We finally settled on seven key dimensions based on input from a number of third party sites.

I believe we got the MPV formula right by asking the right questions.

We first set out to determine reach by examining the number of followers and buzz an individual has on sites like Twitter and Google. We then needed to determine how much impact an individual had with their followers and subscribers. We asked questions like: How often were they /> [...]
